I put some clothes on yesterday and went for a walk around my neighborhood. I wasn’t walking very fast, but realized I was out of breath when my husband called and I had to actually hold a conversation. This was pleasing to me because I don’t really like exercising, but do like being mildly active. I especially like when my activity is more of the fun variety, and yet I reap physical benefits as a bonus.
So as I got closer to home I decided to round one more block. I crossed the street to walk near the field and came upon the preschool on the corner. I hear kids playing from our bedroom window all the time so I didn’t think much of it until 3 kids came running toward the fence.
I don’t know what they were doing as they didn’t seem to be paying much attention to me, but I saw another 2 or 3 munchkins join them. They were chatting among themselves, fingers interlaced in the chain link fence, breathless from running or jumping or playing any number of make-believe games. I watched them as I rounded the final corner to my house and casually waved, not certain they even saw me. One little girl stood up straighter, tilted her chin, and shouted a breathless but hearty ‘Hi!’ in response.
I smiled to her, to them, and to myself ~ vowing from now on to ring my own recess bell a little more often.
